Board Member Requirements, Roles & Responsibilities & Obligations

Board Member Requirements

​

Eligibility:

  1. Demonstrated passion for adventure, sisterhood, and community empowerment.

  2. Prior board experience or willingness to undergo training in nonprofit governance.

  3. Commitment to upholding the mission and values of Black Women Adventures Inc.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Attend quarterly board meetings (virtual or in-person).

  2. Actively participate in organizational strategy, event planning, and decision-making.

  3. Provide fiduciary oversight and ensure financial sustainability.

  4. Support fundraising initiatives, including personal contributions or soliciting donations.

  5. Volunteer for events and support logistics as needed.

  6. Advocate for the organization within personal and professional networks.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, event planning, or marketing.

  2. Strong communication and leadership skills.

  3. Network connections in the adventure, wellness, or nonprofit sectors.

 

Board Member Roles and Responsibilities

1. Governance and Strategic Planning

  • Mission Adherence: Ensure that BWA's activities align with its mission and values.

  • Strategic Planning: Participate in the development and approval of strategic plans focusing on sustainability and growth.

  • Policy Development: Establish and approve policies governing the organization’s operations and ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.

  • Financial Oversight: Approve the budget, monitor financial performance, and ensure financial stability.

 

2. Fundraising and Resource Development

  • Fundraising Participation: Actively engage in fundraising efforts to secure financial resources.

  • Donor Engagement: Cultivate relationships with donors, sponsors, and partners to enhance funding.

 

3. Advocacy and Outreach

  • Community Representation: Represent BWA in the community, advocating for its mission and programs.

  • Network Building: Leverage personal and professional networks to promote BWA’s initiatives and expand its reach.

 

4. Program Support and Development

  • Program Planning: Guide the development and implementation of BWA’s programs and activities.

  • Performance Monitoring: Evaluate program effectiveness to ensure community needs are met and desired outcomes are achieved.

 

5. Organizational Leadership

  • Executive Support: Support the recruitment and onboarding of the Executive Director, providing feedback and ensuring effective leadership.

  • Board Development: Participate in recruiting, orienting, and developing new board members to maintain a strong and diverse board.

 

Board Member Obligations

1. Attendance and Participation

  • Meeting Attendance: Attend and actively participate in 80% of all board and committee meetings.

  • Event Participation: Support and attend BWA events, programs, and activities as board representatives.

 

2. Financial Commitment

  • Membership Fee: Contribute or raise an annual board membership fee of $1,000 to support startup operations.

  • Personal Contributions: Make additional personal financial contributions to the best of one’s ability and encourage others to do the same.

 

3. Ethical Conduct and Confidentiality

  • Ethical Standards: Uphold high ethical standards, avoid conflicts of interest, and maintain integrity in all board activities.

  • Confidentiality: Protect the confidentiality of sensitive information and discussions related to BWA.

 

4. Continuous Learning and Improvement

  • Board Training: Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance governance skills.

  • Self-Evaluation: Engage in periodic self-evaluations and board assessments to improve performance.
