Being a Black woman in the adventure world often means navigating multiple intersections of identity, which can bring both unique strengths and challenges. For many, there's the added layer of breaking stereotypes that are sometimes associated with Black women in outdoor spaces or adventure sports.
Historically, Black women have often been underrepresented in outdoor activities like hiking, climbing, surfing, and international backpacking. But the tide is turning as more women step into these spaces, determined to show that the great outdoors is for everyone. Organizations such as Outdoor Afro and Black Girls Trekkin' have been pivotal in creating inclusive communities where Black women feel empowered to explore and connect with nature without feeling like they’re venturing into unknown territory alone.
